The closing ceremony of the “Full-scale Gundam Statue” was held on March 5th (Sun) at the festival plaza in DiverCity Tokyo Plaza in Odaiba, Tokyo. The display was also taken down the same day.
We will now go into the report on the ceremony which was crowded by many press and fans alike.
The ceremony began with a video projected on the wall screen that reflected on the history of the Gundam Statue. Representatives from affiliated organizations then each gave an address.
What especially excited the audience was an explanation by Mr. Yasuo Miyagawa, President of Sunrise Inc., of a new project. He announced that following the Gundam Statue “RG 1/1 RX-78-2 GUNDAM Ver. GFT,” a “Full-scale Unicorn Gundam Statue” will be erected on display in Fall 2017 as their new project. The audience erupted into shouts of surprise and joy along with enormous applause.

Mr. Miyagawa raised two points as to why they chose “Unicorn Gundam” and said, “One, it is a mobile suit from the Universal Century timeline that follows the “RX-78-2 Gundam” and, two, Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn was an extremely challenging series.” He spoke of his enthusiasm for the new project and compared it to the word “possibility” that appeared frequently in Gundam UC, “I would like to appeal to you with the possibility of living in space, the possibility of understanding each other, and the possibilities that people hold.”
Mr. Miyagawa also revealed that the new facility replacing “GUNDAM FRONT TOKYO,” which will end its operations on April 5th (Wed), on the 7th floor of DiverCity Tokyo Plaza will be “THE GUNDAM BASE TOKYO” opening in Summer 2017. He also revealed that the “RG 1/1 RX-78-2 GUNDAM Ver. GFT” will be used for the “GUNDAM GLOBAL CHALLENGE,” a large project for Gundam’s approaching 40th anniversary.

Director Tomino spoke in regards to the Gundam Statue, “The fact that this character, born from a science fiction anime series, was actually able to be erected in this form is all due to the support from everyone here,” and expressed his gratitude towards the fans that have continued to love the Gundam series. He then spoke of his expectations for the future while reference the new project, “To the young people here, I would be very happy if you receive encouragement from this statue to create even more wonderful things.” He then concluded the event with, “We would not have been able to create such a statue if not for everyone’s support.
