The Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt: DECEMBER SKY late show was held on August 15th (Tues) at Shinjuku Piccadilly at Sunrise Festival 2017: Shouun, an event that holds screenings of titles from Sunrise and Bandai Namco Pictures.
At the event, there was a talk show following the screening of the Japanese-subtitled English dub. Mr. Naruyoshi Kikuchi, responsible for the music of the movie, and Producer Naohiro Ogata appeared on stage as guests and revealed unknown stories during the movie’s production.
Without further ado, let’s quickly go into the report of the event.
▲ As this was a screening of an overseas dub, Ms. Akane Hagino, the Sunrise International Department Manager, also appeared on stage. Inside stories during the production of the overseas dub, such as how recording takes time for the English dubbing due to each voice actor recording individually in contrast to the process in Japan, were revealed. There were also people from overseas in the audience so the talk was also simultaneously interpreted by Mr. Sone!
▲ Mr. Kikuchi spoke about the soundtrack, “With exception to the movie, the music is created before we see the entire original version of the series, so production of the soundtrack was conducted using an order list and through prior meetings.” Additionally, it was revealed that the soundtrack was made with the idea that it is “music that the two protagonists are listening to during battle!”
▲ A video message from Ms. Stephanie Sheh, Director of Audiography of the English dub, Mr. Johnny Yong Bosch, voice of Daryl, and Ms. Cherami Leigh, voice of Claudia, was also shown! Surprisingly, Ms. Stephanie also voices Audrey from Gundam Unicorn, Mr. Johnny voices Lelouch from Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, and Ms. Cherami voices Kudelia from Iron-Blooded Orphans. Voices of surprise erupted from the audience at their wide range in acting!
▲ Producer Ogata revealed that the vomiting scene is packed with the Director of Audiography’s fastidiousness as an inside story during voice recording. The contents and amount of liquids was also taken into account and then performed by the voice actor.
▲ The trailer of BANDIT FLOWER for its simultaneous worldwide release was also shown on screen. Producer Ogata spoke about the current state of production, “We’ve also prepared many additional scenes.” Announcements for Mr. Kikuchi’s concert at Anime NYC in New York as well as the release of the second soundtrack on November 15th were made!
▲ A look into the Gundam panel held at Anime Expo 2017 in America was revealed for the first time and the enthusiasm from the panel caused the theater to burst into applause!
▲ Lastly, a lottery event was conducted and the winner was presented with a volume of the American version of Thunderbolt signed by Mr. Yasuo Otagaki!
Naruyoshi Kikuchi (Music)
I’m grateful to have been given this opportunity to work on a Gundam series and receive so much support. The second soundtrack is at a craftsmanship that surpasses that of the first soundtrack, so I hope everyone is looking forward to its release. Thank you very much.
Naohiro Ogata (Producer)
This is our first attempt in screening an English dub, but I hope that Gundam is spread throughout the world through this method from now on. I will work hard on BANDIT FLOWER for its November release, so please continue to support the series.
Akane Hagino (Sunrise International Department Manager)
The English voice team worked very hard on Thunderbolt. I’m also happy that the production of BANDIT FLOWER has been decided, so definitely please also check out the English dub version should it be released. Thank you very much.
Yoshihiro Sono (MC)
I’ve been confident in myself after receiving support during the winter of Acguy with series such as Mobile Suit Acguy MSM-04 (Acguy Hakase), but after watching the trailer, I’m very much looking forward to BANDIT FLOWER in November. Thank you very much for today.
