The second screening event with staff talks for Mobile Suit Gundam THE ORIGIN: Clash at Battle of Loum, currently a big-hit screening event at 35 theaters nationwide, took place on September 21st (Thurs) at Shinjuku Piccadilly in Tokyo.
As the second screening revolved around talks on MSD and Doan’s Island, Mr. Tsukasa Kotobuki, who is responsible for character designs of the series, Mr. Junji Ohno, author of the manga Mobile Suit Gundam THE ORIGIN MSD: Cucuruz Doan’s Island, Mr. Atsuhiko Sekiguchi, responsible for setting production of THE ORIGIN, and Mr. Kiyoshi Tsukamoto, production copy editor, appeared as guests on this day.
The talk began with an introduction to Cucuruz Doan. Although he is a character of Mobile Suit Gundam and appears in the TV series, he does not appear in the first three parts of the theatrical version. This time, he was introduced once more while at the same time serving as a review of his character.
▲ Cucuruz Doan appears in episode 15 of the TV series! He fights against the Principality of Zeon Forces and the Earth Federation Forces in pursuit with his famous line, “I’ll show you my Mobile Suit Martial Arts!”
The character’s design in the manga was handled by Mr. Kotobuki. Regarding re-drawing Doan, he commented that he designed him with the image of a “surprisingly good guy once he shaves his stubble.”
Upon Mr. Ohno being asked about his troubles from the perspective of drawing the manga, he commented, “(As I’m drawing while relying on General Director Yasuhiko’s art style), there are times when I return to my own art style.” Mr. Kotobuki also agreed to the difficulty in recreating Mr. Yasuhiko’s artistic touch.
▲ Doan appears as a test pilot of the Y-02 Platoon where mobile suit development training takes place!
▲ The mobile suits are designed by Mr. Hajime Katoki! Several suits that appear are linked to MSD!
An original suit by the name of “Gundam Local Type (North American Front)” as well as “Waff” and “Bugu”, mobile suits that rarely appear in the anime version, play active roles in the manga.
Bugu, who appears in the leaked video of episode 4 of the anime, is actually part of a background story where Doan had previously piloted the suit. This means that the anime, manga, and MSD are closely linked together.
The story will finally launch into Operation British and, though the latter development that will be depicted has already been decided, he enthusiastically said, “I want it to be something you can rack your brains over,” regarding the process to an already settled destination in the story.
The manga Mobile Suit Gundam THE ORIGIN MSD: Cucuruz Doan’s Island is currently a popular serialization in the monthly Gundam Ace and the latest volume, volume 2, is scheduled to finally release on October 26th (Thurs).
Definitely please check out the manga together with the anime Mobile Suit Gundam THE ORIGIN: Clash at Battle of Loum.
