Char Aznable was valued for his achievements in history’s first mobile suit battle on the lunar surface of Mare Smythii and was re-appointed as a Principality of Zeon officer and received this mobile suit once becoming a mobile suit pilot.
At Char’s request, customizations were conducted with the MS-06 Zaku II as a base. The suit was painted with the pilot’s personal favorite color, red, and, to indicate its status as a commander unit, a multi-blade antenna was attached. Although the base structure of the suit is the same as the MS-06 Zaku II, the propulsion unit limited has been lifted for the suit to obtain even higher mobility as per Char’s instructions. As a result, though there is a higher risk of damage to the suit from its generator or the heat of its propeller, the MS-06 Zaku II is now able to use its propulsion ability to its utmost limit. However, when compared to standard suits, the suit requires severe maneuver technology, making it difficult to service. The suit specializes in single hit-and-run battles that freely uses its high propulsion and is said to be 30% higher than that of a standard suit. It is after the red suit left an impression on the battlefield, freely and skillfully rushing about, that Char was afterwards known as the “Red Comet.”

The Principality of Zeon has conducted an official mass production of the MS-05 Zaku I as the outbreak of the Zeon war of independence is close at hand and combat deployment is underway. However, results from a collection of operative data of the MS-05 Zaku I in combat show that mobility had decreased due to the effect of the fluid pulse system’s energy transmission power pipes being placed inside its armor. The suit’s length of operation had also been shortened due to its lowered ratio capacity. There were multiple problems that cannot be overlooked going towards the future war. Furthermore, the standard performance of the MS-05 Zaku I must be improved through repair and it has become clear that its extensibility is low due its design having no room for avoided waste. Therefore, a plan to improve the design while considering its extensibility and other parts was made in response to a situation change that would occur after the outbreak of war, its productivity, and maintainability. The MS-05 Zaku I was re-designed and developed into an all new main-force MS. Its power pipes are configured in the same way as the MS-04 Bugu, on the outside of its armor, and aimed for fusion reactor output improvement, which increased the suit’s extensibility. Thus, the re-designed prototype suit MS-06 Zaku II is completed. The prototype model of the MS-06 Zaku II before its mass production added an “A” to its model number and was called the MS-06A Zaku II. The MS-06A Zaku II brought performance and results from operation experiments that satisfied the upper echelon of the Principality of Zeon Forces.
It was immediately decided that Zaku II would be used for standard usage and mass production began before the outbreak of the war. The early production type MS-06 Zaku II, improved and made into mass produced mobile suits, was given a “C” at the end of its model number and became classified as a “C-type” Zaku. Its fixed shoulder armor shield was also installed as the MS-05S Zaku I’s defense armament and was thereafter mass produced as the main weapon of the Principality of Zeon. The MS-06 Zaku II series uses the C-type as a base with added minor changes.
